When is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week starts each year on May 6th and ends on Florence Nightingale’s birthday on May 12th, with May 6th being recognized as National Nurses Day.

Who is Florence Nightingale? Also known as “The Lady with the Lamp," Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was a caring nurse and a trailblazing leader who wrote over 150 books, pamphlets, and reports on health-related topics. She is credited with being the founder of modern nursing through her groundbreaking views on sanitation and cleanliness, influencing quality care within healthcare for centuries to come.

What is the history behind National Nurses Week?

Although National Nurses Week has only been celebrated since the 1970s,the nursing profession itself has long been supported and promoted by the American Nurses Association (ANA). Since its inception and creation, numerous individuals have championed for a day to recognize and appreciate the profession and its workers. If you don’t have anyone specific in mind, sending a note or gift to the hospital or facility you received care from can also be a great way to recognize healthcare heroes.
